Seems most of today’s problems are due to two American tycoons, John D Rockefeller and RJ Reynolds, both Baptists. How so? The former gave us gasoline and the latter, cigarettes. They made zillions, which among other things eventually gave us Riverside Church in NYC, Rockefeller Institute, Wake Forest University, and so on ad almost infinitum.
Currently power mad, control freaks in a Georgia city are threatening to make smoking illegal anywhere in their fair city (never mind property rights of the Constitution). Smoking is a bad habit for many reasons, health being the biggest concern. Reynolds’ grandson founded the anti-smoking drive he felt so strongly about it. But even he didn’t go ape and think their ought to be a law. Concern is justified but imposing one’s will on another through law is always questionable.
While we’re attacking bad ideas of basic habits look at Rockefeller and his legacy, fuel for cars. If one can impose there will on others regardless, could we shut down all drive-thrus, please? Compared to the pollution by idling cars at banks, Mickey Ds and such, Pharmacies, automatic car washes, stoplights even… in one hour, smoking tobacco products for a year looks like a healthy air campaign. So you go, Georgia city. Ban idling cars. After all, the businesses are still available for walk-ins.
Capitalistic energy and business leaders? Who needs ‘em?
